The Royal Philatelic Collection, by Sir John Wilson, the Keeper of the Royal Philatelic Collection and edited by Clarence Winchester. This book presents the foundation and the development of the Royal Philatelic Collection in a manner worthy of its importance and to record in catalogue form its fascinating and educational contents.
The are 12 large lithographed color plates in this book, all sunk on card stock and proof like in quality and with glassine overlays over each, depicting mostly rarities from the collection in their issued colors as well as Edward Henry Corbould's Queen Victoria, the Britannia designs from Mauritius, the 'Chalon' heads and the New South Wales Crown designs. There are also a large number of illustrations in black & white.
This book will immediately strike you as something out of the ordinary. It is very large: it is 10½" X 14½" in size, has bright red covers and it weighs 11½ pounds. This volume was published in 1952 with the "Gracious Permission of His Majesty King George the Sixth", and all pages are on light weight card stock, with the printing and the color plates nothing short of exquisite. The book is not paginated, rather it is presented in sections, but contains about 500 pages, hard cover. Used, but appears new with a few minor corner bumps to the covers. The back cover is partially separated from the heavy page preceding it, but it is not loose and certainly not in any danger of immediate detachment but should be repaired. The original cloth covered slip case is also included, but it is only in good condition but much better than most.
A rare and magnificent book!
