《簪花仕女图》是一幅工笔重彩画,线条工细,色彩浓丽。中国画的特点是以线条作为主要的造型手段,该图的线条介于铁线描与游丝描之间,细劲而有气韵,流动多姿,典雅含蓄。在贵妇人的脸部和手部的勾画上,用笔准确、圆润。特别是对手的描绘,略带夸张而刻划细腻,生动传神,如捉蝶者手的柔弱、捏花者指尖的情态、执绋者手的灵巧自如等。贵妇人身上的纱衫,线条流利飘逸,质感极强,人物的肌肤和花纹通过纱衫隐隐可见。人物体型也塑造得婀娜多姿,丰腴健美,反映了盛唐时期中国人的审美情趣。
(3-1)“图卷之一”。画面是两个贵妇人戏犬的形象。一贵妇人手执绋子逗弄小犬,另一贵妇人则在一旁观看、指点画中活泼可爱的小犬,出产于亚洲北部的撒马尔罕地区。这种小犬得之不易,只有王宫和贵族家庭才能豢养。它是唐时贵族妇女消磨岁月、嬉游消遣的伴侣。
(3-2)“图卷之二”。画面突出的是一贵妇人看花的形象。贵妇人右手拈一枝红花,左手拿一金钗,正思量把花插在头上的恰当的位置;画面中左为一举翅振羽的白鹤,右为一执团扇的婢女,正低头沉思,有一种茫然的表情。
(3-3)“图卷之三”。画面上出现的是两个贵妇人。一贵妇人从旁边的花丛中捉到一只蝴蝶后,正微微侧身回视奔跑狂吠的小犬和缓步行走的白鹤;一贵妇人则双手拢袖,从远处姗姗而来。

Zhou Fang (周昉, ca 730-800) was an influential figure painter of the mid-Tang Dynasty. His courtesy names include Jingxuan (景玄) and Zhonglang (仲朗). Zhou Fang lived in the Tang capital of Chang’an, which is modern Xi’an, during the 8th century. He came from a noble background and this was reflected in his works, which included Court Ladies Wearing Flowered Headdresses (簪花仕女图). Zhou Fang was influenced by the pure and detailed style of Gu Kaizhi (顾愷之).
