Thomas Albert Sebeok (born Sebok, Hungarian: [ˈʃɛbøːk], in Budapest, Hungary, on November 9, 1920; died December 21, 2001 in Bloomington, Indiana) was a polymath[1] American semiotician and linguist.[2][3][4][5][6]
Life and work[edit]
Sebeok, a professor emeritus at Indiana University, expanded the purview of semiotics to include non-human signaling and communication systems, coining the term "zoosemiotics" and raising some of the issues addressed by the philosophy of mind. He was also among the founders of biosemiotics.[7] As a linguist, he published several articles and books analyzing aspects of the Mari language (referring to it by the name "Cheremis"). His transdisciplinary work and professional collaborations spanned the fields of anthropology, biology, folklore studies, linguistics, psychology, and semiotics. He was especially renowned for his ability to bring together specialists from neighboring fields in order to generate path-breaking perspectives on, for example, the study of myth, psycholinguistics, stylistics, animal communication and biosemiotics.
Based on his field of competence, Sebeok rejected the experiments on the putative linguistic abilities of apes, such as those described by David Premack, assuming the existence of a deeper, more universal and more meaningful underlying substrate: the "semiotic function".
In 1944, he became a naturalized citizen of the United States. In 1941, Sebeok earned a bachelor's degree at University of Chicago. He earned a master's degree at University of Chicago in 1943 and, in 1945, a doctorate at Princeton University. In 1943, he arrived at Indiana University in Bloomington, to assist the AmerindianistCarl Voegelin in managing the country's largest Army Specialized Training Program in foreign languages. He then created the university's department of Uralic and Altaic Studies, covering the languages of Eastern Europe, Russia and Asia. He was also the chair of the university's Research Center for Language and Semiotic Studies, retiring in 1991.
Sebeok was the editor-in-chief of the journal Semiotica, the leading periodical in the field, from its establishing in 1969, until 2001.[8] He was also the editor of several book series and path-breaking encyclopedias, including "Approaches to Semiotics" (over 100 volumes), "Current Trends in Linguistics", and the "Encyclopedic Dictionary of Semiotics".
In the early 1980s, Sebeok composed a report for the US Office of Nuclear Waste Management titled Communication Measures To Bridge Ten Millennia,[9] discussing solutions to the problem of nuclear semiotics, a system of signs aimed at warning future civilizations from entering geographic areas contaminated by nuclear waste.[10] The report proposed a "folkloric relay system" and the establishment of an "atomic priesthood" of physicists, anthropologists, semioticians to preserve the true nature of hazardous site.[11]
In addition to his steady intellectual contributions to a number of fields over more than sixty years, Sebeok was a quintessential entrepreneurial scholar, organizing hundreds of international conferences and institutes, playing a key role in organizations such as the Linguistic Society of America, International Association for Semiotic Studies and the Semiotic Society of America, and in supporting the creation of linguistic and semiotics teaching programs and scholarly associations throughout the world.[12]
Sebeok's personal library on semiotics, comprising more than 4,000 volumes of books and 700 journals, is preserved at the Department of Semiotics at the University of Tartu in Estonia.[13]
Sebeok is survived by his wife (and frequent co-author), Jean Umiker-Sebeok, and three daughters: Veronica C. Wald, Jessica A. Sebeok, and Erica L. Sebeok. Sebeok is also survived by one grandson, Oliver Thomas Sebeok Shuchart, and one granddaughter, Miranda Lynn Sebeok Shuchart.

Hajdú Péter (Budapest, 1923. december 27. – Budapest, 2002. szeptember 19.) Széchenyi-díjas magyar nyelvész, egyetemi tanar, a Magyar Tudomanyos Akadémia rendes tagja.
Kutatasi területe: urali nyelvrendszerek, a finnugor-urali nyelvészet altalanos kérdései, a nyelvhasonlítas (összehasonlíto, tipologiai, arealis) modszertani kérdései és konkrét nyelveken valo vizsgalata; a szamojéd nyelvleíras és nyelvtörténet; a nyelvészet alkalmazasa az urali nyelvek és népek elotörténetének vizsgalataban.
Életpalyaja[forrasszöveg szerkesztése]
Középiskolai tanulmanyait a Lonyay utcai Reformatus Gimnaziumban végezte, majd 1941 és 1945 között a budapesti Pazmany Péter TudomanyegyetemBölcsészettudomanyi Karanak magyar-német szakos hallgatoja volt. 1945-ben szerzett magyar-német szakos középiskolai tanari oklevelet és védte meg bölcsészdoktori értekezését „A vogul nyelv szovégi maganhangzoi” targykörben.
1945-tol 1951-ig az Orszagos Széchényi Könyvtar kutatojaként a keszthelyiFestetics-kastély könyvtaraban dolgozott, ezt követoen visszaköltözött Budapestre, és a Magyar Tudomanyos Akadémia Nyelvtudomanyi Intézetében a Finnugor Osztaly munkatarsa lett. 1952-ben kandidatusi, 1967-ben a nyelvtudomanyok doktora fokozatot érte el. Tevékeny része volt A magyar nyelv történeti-etimologiai szotara munkalatainak elindítasaban.
1959-ben megalapította a szegedi Jozsef Attila Tudomanyegyetemen a Finnugor tanszéket, annak tanszékvezeto egyetemi tanara volt 1974-ig. Ez a Finnugor Tanszék elsosorban a szamojéd nyelvészet és az urali ostörténetkutatas muhelyeként valt ismertté Hajdú Péter vezetése alatt.[1] 1959. szeptember 16-an egyetemi tanari kinevezést kapott, a szegedi egyetemen a tanszékvezetés mellett 1961-tol 1964-ig rektorhelyettesként tevékenykedett, 1972–1974-ben a Bölcsészettudomanyi Kar dékanja tisztre valasztottak meg.
1961-ben harom honapot töltött Finnorszagban tanulmanyúton, majd vendégprofesszorként muködött a bécsi (1969–71), azungvari (1972), a müncheni (1978–79), késobb az uppsalai (1985) egyetemen. Legaktívabb éveiben, az 1960-as évekelejétol az 1990-es évek elejéig szamos tudomanyos tisztséget töltött be, s kapcsolodott szamos szakmai tarsasaghoz, mely abban a korban, a túlpolitizalt tudomanyos közéletben szinte szükségszeru volt, ha valaki tartani akarta alapveto tudomanyos kutatasi, s az azzal kapcsolatos kiadasi és oktatasi lehetoségeit.
1974-tol 1982-ig az MTA Nyelvtudomanyi Intézetének igazgatoja volt. 1970-ben az MTA levelezo, 1975-ben rendes tagjai soraba valasztottak. A Nyelv- és Irodalomtudomanyi Osztaly vezetoségi tagja volt 1981 és 1985 között, majd elnöke 1990-ig (ilyen minoségében az MTA elnökségében is részt vett). Az MTA Altalanos Nyelvészeti Munkabizottsagaban, az Alkalmazott Nyelvészeti Bizottsagban, az Urali-finnugor Bizottsagban dolgozott. 1970 és 1975 között az Uralisztikai Bizottsagot vezette. Rövid ideig a Környezettudomanyi Elnökségi Bizottsag és az Akadémiai Kutatohelyek Tanacsa tagja volt. 1992 és 1995 között a Tudomanyos Minosíto Bizottsag tagjaként bíralt el kandidatusi és akadémiai doktori értekezéseket. 1982–1991-ig azELTE Finnugor Nyelvtudomanyi Tanszékén egyetemi tanar, ebbol 1986–1991 közt tanszékvezeto egyetemi tanar. 1991–1995-ig az ELTE Finnugor Nyelvészeti MTA Kutatohely vezetoje, majd 1996-tol halalaig nyugdíjas kutatoprofesszor.

Elsosorban a szamojéd nyelvekkel, majd foként az urali ostörténetkutatassal foglalkozott. Domokos Péterrel tarsszerzoje voltUrali nyelvrokonaink (Budapest, 1978 és 1980) címu monografianak, mely 1982-ben olaszul, 1987-ben pedig németül is megjelent. 1968-as Chrestomathia Samoiedica címu munkaja maig a szamojéd nyelvészet alapmuve. A szamojéd népek és nyelvek címu, eredetileg 1949-ben készült könyvét The Samoyed Peoples and Languages címmel 1963-ban és 1968-banangolul is kiadtak. Teljes életmuve körülbelül négyszaz önallo szaktanulmanyt és tíz – szerzoként vagy szerkesztoként jegyzett – tanulmanykötetet jelent.
